Juliana returns to the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center to celebrate the birthday of Baroque master Johann Sebastian Bach with a performance that upends more than 200 years of tradition in reviving the long-lost practice of improvisation in Bach’s beloved cello suites.
“Bach wrote music for extremely troubled times,” Juliana recently noted, “and yet he wrote this ephemeral music that was meant to be different every time it was played. As listeners, it roots us in the moment and binds us through the power of shared experience. It’s an idea that is just as powerful today as it was hundreds of years ago, and one that I can’t wait to share!”
