The music of Johann Sebastian Bach has been beloved for generations – but what if the Bach we know and love was only the beginning?

Join Juliana as she breaks with 200 years of tradition to explore the long-lost practice of spontaneous improvisation in two of Bach’s lesser-known musical gems, the mysterious Suite No. 5 in c minor and the joyously raucous Suite No. 6 in D Major.

Featuring the antique “scordatura,” or “mistuning” of her 1677 Mayr cello, as well as an appearance by the rarely-heard 5-string violoncello piccolo, this is an evening of incredible music you won’t want to miss!

Juliana joins her close friend and colleague, pianist Jed Distler, in this special performance of works for cello and piano by American composers. Celebrated during their individual lifetimes but largely unknown to modern audiences, these composers represent a fascinating cross-section of the American experience: a self-taught child prodigy (Amy Beach); a Jewish refugee (Leo Ornstein); a native New Yorker whose parents’ families found themselves on opposite sides of the Civil War (Helen C. Crane); the first black woman to have a work performed by a major symphony orchestra (Florence Price); and her student (Margaret Bonds), who was a frequent collaborator with the poet Langston Hughes.

Featuring the New York premiere of the Crane Six Idylls for Cello and Piano, this is a celebration of the rich and diverse history of classical music in America you won’t want to miss!
